ASI Team - Craig Gentry
Craig Gentry
Craig is a highly experienced freediving professional and one of the most experienced instructors in the United States. Craig is one of Performance Freediving International's earliest instructors, a former President of USA Freediving, a U.S. National Freediving Champion, and two time Captain of the U.S. National Freediving Team.
Since 2007, Craig has provided specialized training to various organizations and clients such as DARPA, NOAA, aquatic military units, professional big-wave surfers, outrigger canoe teams, and the America's Cup Sailing Team (Team Oracle/Red Bull), among many others.
Craig’s interest in freediving started when he was a teenager after watching a film titled 'The Big Blue. The movie was loosely based on the lives of two competitive freedivers, an Italian and Frenchman. Craig was living in Italy at the time and didn't realize how much the movie would influence the direction of his life.
In 2005 Craig moved to the Bahamas, met an Italian freediver, bought a small boat and focused on the technical and performance aspects of freediving. Shortly after moving to the Bahamas Craig attended Performance Freediving International's Intermediate Level (Level 2) freediving course in Miami, Florida. A few months later Craig supported Performance Freediving International’s Team in the Cayman Islands with the organization and logistical support for AIDA world record attempts in freediving depth disciplines. Inspired by the event, Craig entered his first AIDA sanctioned depth competition in Grand Cayman a month later.
Craig continued depth training at home in the Bahamas and in South Florida. While training he sustained serious injuries to both ears which limited his ability to freedive deep for nearly a year. While injured, Craig entered is second AIDA competition, attending the U.S. National Freediving Championships in Hawaii in 2006, won, and became the U.S. National Freediving Champion. Diving injured is highly discouraged.
Craig went on to Captain two AIDA U.S. National Freediving Teams in 2006 and 2008 competing in the AIDA World Freediving Championships competing in Hurghada and Sharm el Sheik, Egypt.
Having been seriously injured as an athlete has helped Craig as a Performance Freediving International instructor and a high-performance coach with adopting conservative approaches to freedive training methods in an effort to mitigate the risk of injuries which can be permanent.
Additionally, Craig served as President of USA Freediving after serving on its executive board.
Craig's goals for freediving are the same now as they were when he served as USA Freediving's President, to promote the safe advancement of the sport of freediving, the growth of the freediving community, and to create training opportunities.
In 2007 Craig was invited to join Performance Freediving International's training team. Over the years Craig has contributed to Performance Freediving International's course development, structure, content, and manuals.
In 2010 Craig founded Ocean Freediving International in Hawaii, formerly Hawaii Freedivers. Ocean Freediving supports Oahu’s freediving community with training and education and blue water line diving charters off of Oahu.
An accomplished ocean photographer and videographer, Craig captures images to help preserve its health and beauty for future generations through awareness.
Craig studied Multimedia Cinematic Production at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii.
